School improvement can be sustainable if teachers participate in leadership at the classroom and school organizational levels. However, to create a culture of distributed leadership in a school requires a shift in perception of school leadership as actions of an individual called a head teacher to a process of collective influence. With this imperative arises the need for effective leadership development programmes for teachers. This book, therefore, provides a theoretical lens for approaching leadership development in the school context. A range of strong contextualized programmes, head teacher’s leadership style and the school culture of collegiality, shared vision and values, can foster teacher leadership in the school. This work should be useful to school leaders and policy-makers keen to address the pervasive teacher apathy and attrition rates.
