Solid dispersion offers an intelligent approach for the drug delivery for enhancing the solubility of drug as well enhances the bioavailability of the drug. Many technologies have been developed for the manufacture of solid dispersions on small and large scale. This study intends to provide an overview of advantages and disadvantages of solid dispersion preparation method, their stability, bio distribution and their uses as drug delivery system. Sometimes the formation of solid dispersions results in metastable state, which has greater solubility and hence faster dissolution rates. The presence of a small amount of the soluble carrier in the crystalline lattice of the poorly soluble drug may also produce a dissolution rate faster than the pure compound with similar particle size.
