Masters of Art 230x310 128 страниц. 1988 год. Harry N. Abrams Georges Seurat is not easy to know, either as an artist or as a personality. Yet, to know little or nothing of his life can hardly detract from our appreciation or understanding of his highly deliberate painting, for his is a self-sufficient art, which is to be understood primarily in terms of its formal and plastic qualities. Seurat's entire artistic career is compressed within a dozen years, but a great deal of study, research, and hard work was crammed into this period. At his death he left behind only four very large paintings and a fair number of smaller canvases, oil studies, and drawings. Their quality is great enough, however, to arrest us, to make us feel that we are indeed in the presence of a master.
