LAP Lambert Academic Publishing While scholars have extensively studied the iconography of Saint Clare throughout the centuries, nobody has investigated in depth the meaningful implications which Clare’s different clothing might have. Sometimes her habit is grey, sometimes it is brown; at times, her neck, cheeks and forehead are covered by a white cloth, at times her face is fully visible and her head is covered only with a black veil. These differences are more than mere artistic characterizations. They are clear indications of the time and context in which the paintings were commissioned and of the aims and concerns of those who commissioned them.
